The road that once carried tribes together had long since divided.

What began as a single path worn deep by marching feet in the days of conquest had splintered into narrow tracks bending toward separate valleys and private fields. Grass pressed in from either side, reclaiming what unity once held. The stones of the covenant still stood. The stories were still told. The Name of the Lord was still spoken.

But there was no central leadership.

For nearly three hundred years Israel lived this way.

At dawn, smoke rose from scattered altars across the hills. Each tribe tended its own flame. Each family guarded its own inheritance. Sacrifices were offered sincerely. Prayers filled the air.

But there was no higher word.

When disputes arose, men gathered in circles, not rows. Each man stood as judge in his own cause. Each spoke with certainty. Each believed he was right.

Small disagreements hardened into generational feuds. Blood answered blood. Grudges became inheritance.

While brothers argued in the valleys, enemies watched from the hills. Raiders struck when harvest was heavy. They took grain, livestock, sometimes sons and daughters, and vanished before neighboring tribes could decide whether the fight was theirs to join.

Occasionally, in desperation, a judge would rise. Trumpets would sound. The tribes would unite for a season. Victory would come.

Then the judge would die.
